Challenge
Help both parents and kids enjoy and feel comfortable in a kid-friendly space on Google TV. Current feature was buried behind a cumbersome setup flow that almost felt like it was trying to dissuade parents from using the feature. Other language was often confusing or unclear.
Solution
Speak to users in a way that is both
fun and conversational (for kids) as well as reassuring and professional (for parents).
What I did
- Audited the existing feature, with particular attention to the onboarding process of setting up a new kids profile, and researched similar kid-focused features at other Google products to gather language ideas
- Worked with Legal to rewrite and clarify some of the caveats needed in setup and move them to appropriate steps in the flow
- Proposed new language to various UI elements that manages to speak both to the users (kids) and their parents simultaneously (see examples below)
Result
A more reassuring and straightforward setup flow and user-centered experience that better serves the needs and expectations of both parents and children. The voice is a touch more playful than other parts of Google TV but still within the overall tone and feel of the product. Tricky UX issues like interrupting flows to ask a parent to log in or approve an action were handled without losing too much of that friendly voice.
Triple the amount of kids profiles created in the quarter after updates were launched than in the previous quarter
Revamped setup flows to be clearer about what the feature does and better reassure parents that it's useful and trustworthy.

Before After
In this full-screen modal, my language tweaks made it so we can simultaneously talk to the kid and their parent. It lets the parent know what happened and how to address it while still speaking directly to the child, who is the user here.

Before After
This banner was revamped to straddle the line between empowering kids to feel like this is their space while also subtly letting parents know that they’re in charge of this space.
